A Mismatched Start

The annual city marathon was supposed to be a test of speed and endurance. Leo, however, was more of a walker than a runner. He joined the race hoping to finish, not to win. As the starting horn blared, a wave of athletes surged forward like a tidal wave. Leo stayed behind, matching his pace to the rhythm of his own breathing. While others sprinted toward the horizon, Leo focused on putting one foot in front of the other. The heat rose quickly, turning the asphalt into a shimmering oven. Sweat dripped down his face, stinging his eyes, but he refused to stop walking.

He offered a reassuring smile that calmed her fears. These small acts slowed him down further, pushing him deeper into the rear of the pack.
