Chapter 8: Baoyu Is Beaten

무더운 여름 오후, 끔찍한 소식이 가저택에 도착했습니다. 금천(金釧)이라는 하인이 우물에 몸을 던져 익사했다는 것입니다. 이유는 보옥이 그녀에게 부적절한 말을 했다는 잔인한 소문이었습니다. 소문이 사실인지 아닌지와 관계없이 결과는 같았습니다. 젊은 생명이 잃어진 것입니다.

One hot summer afternoon, terrible news reached the Jia mansion. A servant girl named Jinchuan had thrown herself into a well and drowned. The reason was a cruel rumor that Baoyu had spoken improper words to her. Whether the rumor was true or not, the result was the same: a young life was lost.

보옥의 아버지 가정(賈政)은 소식을 듣고 분노했습니다. 그는 항상 과거 공부를 거부하고 정원의 소녀들과 하루를 보내는 아들을 실망해했습니다. 이제 그는 보옥을 가족 전체의 치욕의 원천으로 보았습니다. "그를 내게 데려오라!" 그가 소리쳤고 그의 얼굴은 분노로 붉어졌습니다.

Baoyu's father, Jia Zheng, was furious when he heard the news. He had always been disappointed in his son, who refused to study for the exams and spent his days with the girls in the garden. Now he saw Baoyu as a source of shame for the entire family. "Bring him to me!" he shouted, his face red with anger.

보옥이 아버지 앞에 끌려왔을 때 가정은 하인들에게 그를 때리라고 명령했습니다. 무거운 대나무 막대가 보옥의 등에 반복해서 떨어졌습니다. 그는 고통으로 비명을 질렀지만 아버지는 자비를 보이지 않았습니다. 다른 가족 구성원들은 소리를 듣고 현장으로 달려가 정에게 멈추라고 간청했습니다.

When Baoyu was brought before his father, Jia Zheng ordered the servants to beat him. The heavy bamboo sticks fell upon Baoyu's back again and again. He cried out in pain, but his father showed no mercy. The other family members heard the sounds and rushed to the scene, begging Jia Zheng to stop.

가모가 도착하여 아들과 손자 사이에 섰습니다. "그를 죽이고 싶다면 먼저 나를 죽여야 해!" 그녀가 선언했습니다. 그녀의 말이 마침내 구타를 멈췄습니다. 보옥은 방으로 옮겨졌고 그의 몸은 상처로 덮여 있었습니다. 대옥이 그를 방문했고 그의 침대 옆에서 조용히 울었습니다.

Grandmother Jia arrived and stood between her son and her grandson. "If you want to kill him, you must kill me first!" she declared. Her words finally stopped the beating. Baoyu was carried to his room, his body covered with wounds. Daiyu came to see him and wept silently by his bed.

이 사건은 보옥의 몸과 마음에 깊은 흔적을 남겼습니다. 그는 정원 밖 세상이 권력과 규칙이 모든 것을 통제하는 가혹한 곳임을 이해하기 시작했습니다. 그가 알던 부드러운 삶은 할머니의 사랑에 의해서만 보호되고 있었고 그 보호는 영원히 지속되지 않을 것이었습니다.

The incident left deep marks on Baoyu's body and his heart. He began to understand that the world outside the garden was a harsh place, where power and rules controlled everything. The gentle life he had known was protected only by his grandmother's love, and that protection would not last forever.
