Chapter 2: Daiyu Arrives at the Jia Mansion

임대옥(林黛玉)은 양주(揚州) 출신 소녀였습니다. 그녀의 아버지는 학자이자 관리였으며, 어머니는 가가의 막내딸이었습니다. 대옥이 아주 어렸을 때 어머니가 돌아가셨고, 그녀는 깊은 슬픔에 잠겼습니다. 직무로 바쁜 아버지는 그녀를 금릉의 할머니에게 보내기로 결정했습니다.

Lin Daiyu was a young girl from the city of Yangzhou. Her father was a scholar and an official, and her mother had been the youngest daughter of the Jia family. When Daiyu was very young, her mother passed away, leaving her in deep sorrow. Her father, busy with his duties, decided to send her to live with her grandmother in Jinling.

여행은 길고 피곤했습니다. 대옥은 배와 마차를 타고 창밖으로 풍경을 바라보며 여행했습니다. 그녀는 조용하고 사려 깊은 아이였으며, 창백한 피부와 나이를 초월한 슬픔이 담긴 어두운 눈을 가지고 있었습니다. 그녀는 적은 짐만 가지고 있었지만 마음은 시와 책으로 가득 차 있었습니다.

The journey was long and tiring. Daiyu traveled by boat and by carriage, watching the countryside pass by through the window. She was a quiet and thoughtful child, with pale skin and dark eyes that seemed to hold a sadness beyond her years. She carried few belongings, but her mind was full of poetry and books.

When she finally arrived at the Jia mansion, she was amazed by its size and beauty. Servants in fine clothes led her through many gates and courtyards. The walls were painted in bright colors, and the gardens were filled with flowers and tall trees. "This place is like a palace," she whispered to herself.

가모는 손녀를 처음 보았을 때 눈물을 흘렸습니다. 그녀는 대옥을 꼭 안고 잃은 딸을 위해 울었습니다. "네가 정말 네 어머니를 닮았구나" 그녀가 부드럽게 말했습니다. 다른 가족 구성원들은 새로 온 사람을 환영하기 위해 모였고, 각자 양주에서 온 조용한 소녀에 대해 궁금해했습니다.

Grandmother Jia wept when she saw her granddaughter for the first time. She held Daiyu close and cried for the daughter she had lost. "You look just like your mother," she said softly. The other members of the family gathered around to welcome the new arrival, each one curious about the quiet girl from Yangzhou.

That evening, Daiyu was given a room next to Baoyu's. She lay in bed, listening to the unfamiliar sounds of the great house. She missed her father and her old home, but she knew that this would be her life now. Little did she know that this mansion would become the center of all her joys and sorrows.
