Chapter 1: The Magic Jade

옛날 옛적, 금릉이라는 큰 도시에 가(賈)라는 부유한 가족이 살고 있었습니다. 그들의 저택은 도시에서 가장 컸으며, 많은 정원과 방이 있었습니다. 가가는 여러 세대에 걸쳐 황제를 섬겼으며 큰 영광과 부를 누렸습니다.

Long ago, in the great city of Jinling, there lived a wealthy family called the Jia. Their mansion was one of the largest in the city, with many courtyards, gardens, and rooms. The Jia family had served the emperor for generations and enjoyed great honor and wealth.

이 가족에서 입에 이상한 돌을 물고 태어난 소년이 있었습니다. 돌은 매끄럽고 따뜻했으며, 고대 문자가 새겨져 있었습니다. 가족은 그것을 "신비한 옥"이라 불렀고 하늘로부터의 선물이라고 믿었습니다. 소년은 가보옥(賈寶玉)이라 이름 지어졌으며 집안의 모든 사람에게 사랑받았습니다.

In this family, a boy was born with a strange stone in his mouth. The stone was smooth and warm, with words written on it in ancient characters. The family called it the "Magic Jade," and they believed it was a gift from heaven. The boy's name was Jia Baoyu, and he was loved by everyone in the house.

보옥은 부드럽고 감수성이 풍부한 아이로 자랐습니다. 같은 나이의 다른 소년들과 달리 그는 과거 시험에 관심이 없었습니다. 그는 집안의 소녀들과 함께 시를 읽고 정원의 아름다움을 즐기는 것을 좋아했습니다. 아버지는 종종 그에게 화를 냈지만 할머니는 항상 그를 보호했습니다.

Baoyu grew up as a gentle and sensitive child. Unlike other boys his age, he had no interest in studying for the government exams. He preferred to spend his time with the girls in the household, reading poetry and enjoying the beauty of the garden. His father was often angry with him, but his grandmother always protected him.

The old lady, known as Grandmother Jia, was the head of the family. She had many grandchildren, but Baoyu was her favorite. She gave him a beautiful room in her own courtyard and let him do as he pleased. "He is different from other children," she would say. "We must let him grow in his own way."
