Chapter 15: The Poverty of the Peasants

룬투 외에도 많은 다른 농부들이 왔다. 그들은 낡은 옷을 입고 있었고, 얼굴은 주름으로 뒤덮여 있었으며, 매우 지쳐 보였다.

Besides Run Tu, many other farmers came too. They wore worn-out clothes, their faces covered with wrinkles, looking very tired.

그들은 물건 옮기는 것을 돕기 위해 왔다. 대가를 요구하지 않고, 단지 돕기 위해서. 그들은 매우 친절하고 매우 정직했지만, 또한 매우 가난했다.

They came to help move things, not asking for payment, just to help out. They were very friendly, very honest, but also very poor.

나는 신발에 큰 구멍이 나서 발가락이 드러난 한 농부를 보았다. 나는 그에게 물었다. "신발이 망가졌는데 왜 새것을 사지 않나요?"

I saw one farmer whose shoe had a large hole, and his toes were exposed. I asked him, "Your shoe is broken, why don't you buy new ones?"

그는 말했다. "돈이 없어, 신을 수 있는 한 괜찮아."

He said, "No money, as long as it can be worn, it's fine."

나는 그를 바라보며 매우 슬펐다. 이 사람들은 매일 힘들게 일해야 하지만 수입은 매우 적다. 그들은 새 옷을 살 여유가 없고, 새 신발을 살 여유가 없으며, 아이들의 수업료를 낼 여유조차 없다.

I looked at him, feeling very sad. These people have to labor hard every day, but their income is very little. They can't afford new clothes, can't afford new shoes, and can't even afford their children's tuition.

이것이 시골의 현실인가? 이것이 농부들의 삶인가?

Is this the reality of the countryside? Is this the life of farmers?
