제14장: 부자의 냉담함

Chapter 14: The Callousness of the Rich

이사할 때 어머니는 몇몇 사람들을 도와달라고 초대했다. 그중에는 차를 운전하고 금시계를 차고 매우 부유해 보이는 부자가 있었다.

When moving, Mother invited some people to help. Among them was a rich man who drove a car, wore a gold watch, and looked very wealthy.

그가 온 후, 그는 마당에 서서 주위를 둘러보며 말했다. "이 집은 너무 낡아서 돈이 별로 안 되겠군."

After he came, he stood in the courtyard, looked around, and said, "This house is too dilapidated, not worth much money."

어머니는 말했다. "몇 천 위안에 팔면 될 거예요."

Mother said, "Selling it for a few thousand yuan will do."

그는 말했다. "5천 위안? 너무 많아, 2천."

He said, "Five thousand yuan? That's too much, two thousand."

어머니는 말했다. "하지만 이 집이 새것이었을 때는 짓는 데 돈이 많이 들었어요."

Mother said, "But when this house was new, it cost a lot of money to build."

그는 말했다. "지금은 그만큼 가치가 없어, 그게 다야."

He said, "Now it's not worth that much, that's it."

나는 이 부자를 바라보며 매우 화가 났다. 그는 돈이 있어서 다른 사람의 재산을 심각하게 여기지 않는다. 그는 돈이 있어서 농부들의 집은 별 가치가 없다고 생각한다.

I looked at this rich man, feeling very angry. He has money, so he doesn't take other people's property seriously. He has money, so he thinks farmers' houses are not worth much.

부자의 냉담함은 나에게 사회의 현실을 보게 했다.

The callousness of the rich made me see the reality of society.
