Chapter 13: Run Tu's Change

룬투는 어렸을 때와 완전히 다르다.

Run Tu is completely different from when he was a child.

어린 시절의 룬투는 활기차고 명랑했으며, 말하기를 좋아하고 웃기를 좋아했다. 그는 항상 할 말이 끊이지 않았고, 항상 들려줄 이야기가 끊이지 않았다.

The Run Tu of childhood was lively and cheerful, liked to talk, liked to smile. He always had endless things to say, always had endless stories to tell.

지금의 룬투는 말이 없고 좀처럼 말하지 않으며, 좀처럼 웃지 않는다. 그의 눈은 피로와 무력감으로 가득 차 있다. 그의 얼굴에는 삶의 고난이 쓰여 있다.

The current Run Tu is silent and rarely speaks, rarely smiles. His eyes are filled with exhaustion and helplessness. His face is written with the hardships of life.

나는 그에게 삶이 매우 힘드냐고 물었다. 그는 괜찮다고, 조금 피곤할 뿐이라고 말했다. 그는 매일 일찍 일어나 밭에서 일해야 하고 밤늦게까지 쉴 수 없다. 일 년 내내 쉴 시간이 없다.

I asked him if life is very difficult. He said, it's alright, just a bit tiring. He has to get up early every day, work in the fields, and can't rest until very late at night. All year round, there's no time to rest.

나는 그에게 아이들은 어떻게 지내는지 물었다. 그는 괜찮지만 학교에 가기가 매우 어렵다고 말했다. 학교가 너무 멀고 수업료가 너무 비싸서 아이들을 몇 년만 학교에 다니게 한 다음 일하러 보내야 한다.

I asked him how the children are doing. He said, they're alright, but it's very difficult to go to school. The school is too far, the tuition is too expensive, so he can only let the children attend school for a few years, then go work.

나는 그를 바라보며 매우 슬펐다. 이것이 삶의 힘인가? 그것이 활기찬 아이를 말 없는 어른으로 바꿀 수 있는가?

I looked at him, feeling very sad. Is this the power of life? Can it turn a lively child into a silent adult?
