Chapter 14: The Callousness of the Rich

引っ越しの際、母は何人かの人を手伝いに呼びました。その中には、車を運転し、金の時計をつけ、とても裕福そうに見える金持ちの男がいました。

When moving, Mother invited some people to help. Among them was a rich man who drove a car, wore a gold watch, and looked very wealthy.

彼が来た後、彼は中庭に立ち、周りを見回して言いました。「この家はあまりにも荒廃していて、あまり金にならない。」

After he came, he stood in the courtyard, looked around, and said, "This house is too dilapidated, not worth much money."

母は言いました。「数千元で売れば十分でしょう。」

Mother said, "Selling it for a few thousand yuan will do."

彼は言いました。「五千元？それは高すぎる、二千だ。」

He said, "Five thousand yuan? That's too much, two thousand."

母は言いました。「でも、この家が新しかった時は、建てるのにたくさんのお金がかかりました。」

Mother said, "But when this house was new, it cost a lot of money to build."

彼は言いました。「今はそんなに価値がない、それだけだ。」

He said, "Now it's not worth that much, that's it."

私はこの金持ちの男を見て、とても腹が立ちました。彼にはお金があるので、他人の財産を真剣に受け止めません。彼にはお金があるので、農民の家は大した価値がないと思っています。

I looked at this rich man, feeling very angry. He has money, so he doesn't take other people's property seriously. He has money, so he thinks farmers' houses are not worth much.

金持ちの冷淡さは、私に社会の現実を見せました。

The callousness of the rich made me see the reality of society.
