Chapter 16: The Grand Garden Is Searched
第十六章：大観園が捜索される
Dark clouds were gathering over the Jia mansion. One evening, a servant found a small box containing improper items in the garden. The news spread quickly, and panic filled the household. The senior members of the family decided that a thorough search must be conducted to find the owner of the box.
賈屋敷の上に暗い雲が集まりました。ある夜、使用人が庭園で不適切な物品の入った小さな箱を見つけました。ニュースは急速に広まり、パニックが家を満たしました。家族の年長者たちは箱の持ち主を見つけるために徹底的な捜索を行うべきだと決めました。
Late at night, groups of servants led by senior family members went through every room in the Grand Garden. They opened drawers, searched under beds, and examined every corner. The young ladies were shocked and humiliated by this invasion of their private spaces. It was as if a storm had entered their peaceful world.
深夜、家族の年長者に率いられた使用人のグループが大観園の各部屋を通りました。彼らは引き出しを開け、ベッドの下を探し、すべての隅を調べました。若い娘たちは彼らのプライベートスペースへのこの侵入にショックを受け、屈辱を感じました。それは嵐が彼らの平和な世界に侵入したかのようでした。
When the search reached Tanchun's room, she stood at the door with anger in her eyes. "How dare you treat us like criminals?" she shouted. "We are the daughters of this family, not thieves!" She ordered her servants to light all the lamps and invited the searchers to look as much as they wanted. Her courage shamed those who had come to search her room.
捜索が探春の部屋に到達した時、彼女は目に怒りを浮かべて扉の前に立ちました。「どうして私たちを犯罪者のように扱うことができるの？」彼女は叫びました。「私たちはこの家族の娘です、泥棒ではありません！」彼女は使用人にすべてのランプを灯すよう命じ、捜索者に好きなだけ見るよう招きました。彼女の勇気は彼女の部屋を捜索しに来た者たちを恥じ入らせました。
But the search continued in other rooms. Servants were questioned, belongings were thrown about, and trust was broken between masters and servants. The Grand Garden, once a place of beauty and joy, now felt like a prison. The young people realized that their happy days were coming to an end.
しかし、捜索は他の部屋で続きました。使用人は尋問され、持ち物は投げられ、主人と使用人の間の信頼は壊れました。かつて美しさと喜びの場所だった大観園は、今では刑務所のようでした。若者たちは彼らの幸せな日が終わりに近づいていることに気づきました。
The search revealed little of importance, but it damaged something that could not be repaired. The trust and peace that had held the household together were now broken. From that night on, everyone knew that the Jia family was falling apart from within.
捜索は重要なことをほとんど明らかにしませんでしたが、修復できない何かを損ないました。家を一つに保っていた信頼と平和は現在壊れていました。その夜以来、皆は賈家が内側から崩壊しつつあることを知ったのでした。
