Chapter 13: Tanchun Takes Charge
第十三章：探春が指揮を執る
When Sister Feng fell ill and could no longer manage the household, the family needed someone to take her place. Grandmother Jia chose Tanchun, one of Baoyu's half-sisters. Tanchun was young but had a clear mind and a strong sense of justice. Everyone was curious to see how she would handle the responsibility.
鳳姐が病気になり、家を管理できなくなった時、家族は彼女の代わりを務める誰かを必要としていました。賈母は宝玉の異母姉妹の一人である探春を選びました。探春は若かったですが、明晰な頭脳と強い正義感を持っていました。皆が彼女がどのように責任を扱うか興味を持っていました。
Tanchun began her work with energy and determination. She reviewed the household accounts and found many problems. Some servants were wasting money, while others were taking more than they deserved. She made a list of new rules and announced them to the entire household.
探春はエネルギーと決意を持って仕事を始めました。彼女は家の帳簿を調べ、多くの問題を見つけました。一部の使用人はお金を無駄にしており、他の者は彼らが受けるべき以上を取っていました。彼女は新しいルールのリストを作り、家全体に発表しました。
"From today, every department will be responsible for its own budget," she declared. "If you save money, you will be rewarded. If you waste it, you will be punished." Her words were firm but fair. The servants listened carefully, knowing that this young lady meant what she said.

Under Tanchun's management, the household began to run more efficiently. Money was saved, and the quality of work improved. Even Sister Feng, when she heard about the changes, admitted that Tanchun was doing an excellent job. "She has a talent for management," Sister Feng said. "Perhaps even better than mine."
探春の管理の下で、家はより効率的に機能し始めました。お金が節約され、仕事の質が向上しました。鳳姐でさえ、変更について聞いた時、探春が素晴らしい仕事をしていることを認めました。「彼女には管理の才能があります」と鳳姐は言いました。「おそらく私より優れているかもしれません。」
But Tanchun knew that her power was limited. She was only a young woman in a family controlled by men. No matter how well she managed the household, her future would be decided by others. She could only do her best in the time she had.
