Iran Says FIFA Must Ensure World Cup Access, Urges Hosts to Issue Visas Without Politics
Iran's Formal Appeal to FIFA
Iranian football authorities have formally requested that FIFA intervene to guarantee that Iranian fans and players can attend the 2026 World Cup without political interference. The Iranian Football Federation submitted an official letter to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, expressing concerns about potential visa complications that could prevent Iranian nationals from traveling to the United States, Canada, and Mexico for the tournament.
Visa Concerns for Iranian Nationals
The 2026 World Cup will be hosted across three nations, with the United States being the primary concern due to ongoing diplomatic tensions between Washington and Tehran. Iranian officials fear that fans could face excessive delays, rejections, or outright bans from obtaining travel visas. The federation has asked FIFA to establish clear guidelines ensuring that visa decisions are based solely on security criteria, not political considerations.
FIFA's Response and Responsibilities
In response to Iran's concerns, FIFA has acknowledged its responsibility to protect the rights of all participating nations' fans. The organization stated that it is in discussions with the three host countries to ensure that visa processes are fair, transparent, and free from political bias. FIFA conventions explicitly prohibit discrimination against fans based on nationality, and the organization has emphasized that host nations must uphold these principles.
Precedent of Political Barriers
This is not the first time political tensions have threatened fan access to major sporting events. Iranian fans were previously blocked from attending matches during the 1998 World Cup in France due to diplomatic conflicts. Human rights organizations have documented cases where nationality-based discrimination affected fans' ability to travel for sporting events, calling for stronger international protections.
Host Nations' Political Commitments
The United States, Canada, and Mexico have all stated their commitment to hosting an inclusive World Cup. However, U.S. visa policies remain some of the most stringent globally, with Iranian nationals facing particularly lengthy and complex application processes. Canadian visa requirements have also raised concerns, though Mexico's historically more lenient approach offers some optimism for fan travel.
Path Forward and Fan Hopes
Football fans across Iran are eagerly awaiting the outcome of these negotiations, hoping that sport can triumph over politics. With the tournament still over a month away, there is time for diplomatic solutions to be found. Iranian supporters groups have called on FIFA to take proactive measures to ensure that no fan is denied the opportunity to witness this historic World Cup based on their passport or political circumstances.
